The introduction of the English/Maori Missal marks a very important stage in the way in which we pray the Mass in New Zealand. For the first time in our history we have a complete Maori translation of the Roman Missal. A great debt of gratitude is owed to all those who participated in a mammoth task of translating all the texts of the Mass, a task that took years rather than days or months. Father Trevor Murray enabled all this to happen by coordinating the translation work magnificently.
Now that the new Missal is in use, we all have a new opportunity to appreciate again the gift that we have in the Mass, the greatest prayer that we can offer. I appreciate the spirit of the priests as they adjust to the new texts. I also appreciate the prayerfulness of the people as they endeavour to make the Mass the source and summit of their prayer life.
